How to look after your treadmill: a simple maintenance guide

Simple treadmill maintenance: cleaning, belt alignment, tension and lubrication, plus how often to do each to keep your machine quiet and running well.

Updated 27 October 2026

A few minutes of care now and then keeps a treadmill quiet, smooth and lasting longer. Always unplug the treadmill before you clean it or adjust anything, and follow the instructions in your quick start guide.

After each use

  • Switch off and unplug. Take the safety key out too, especially if you have children or pets.
  • Wipe it down. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth on the console, handrails and side rails. Keep liquids away from the console and motor.
  • Keep it dry. Don't use or store your treadmill outdoors, in a damp garage or near a bathroom.

Every week or two

  • Vacuum around and under it. Dust and pet hair under the belt make it wear faster. A treadmill mat helps.
  • Check it's level and stable. A machine that rocks gets noisier.

Belt alignment

If the belt drifts to one side, it needs centring. With the treadmill running slowly, turn the rear adjustment bolt a quarter turn at a time on the side the belt is drifting towards, and watch it move back to the middle. Your quick start guide shows where the bolts are.

Belt tension

A belt that slips or hesitates when you step on it may be too loose. Tighten both rear bolts by the same small amount, a quarter turn at a time. Don't overtighten: a belt that's too tight strains the motor.

Lubrication

The belt slides over the deck, and a little silicone lubricant keeps it moving smoothly and quietly.

  • How often? Regularly, depending on how much you use it. As a guide, every three months for normal home use, and more often if you use it every day.
  • What to use: treadmill silicone lubricant only. Never use WD-40, oil or household sprays.
  • How: unplug, lift the edge of the belt, apply a little along the centre of the deck, then walk slowly for a few minutes to spread it.
  • Don't overdo it. Too much makes the belt slip.

Signs something needs attention

  • New squeaks, knocks or grinding
  • The belt slipping, jerking or drifting
  • A burning smell or the motor straining

If you notice any of these, stop using the treadmill, unplug it and contact us.
