Under £300 is where most people buy their first home treadmill. There are lots of choices at this price, and some are much better made than others. Here's what to check before you buy.
1. The motor
Look for a brushless motor. It runs more smoothly and quietly than an older brushed motor, with fewer parts to wear out. Horsepower (HP) gives you a rough idea of how hard the motor works: more HP means it strains less, especially for heavier users.
2. The belt size
The belt is the part you walk on. A wider, longer belt feels safer and more comfortable, especially at faster speeds. For walking, 40 cm wide is a good minimum. If you want to jog, go for 100 cm long or more.
3. Incline
Incline makes a walk harder without going faster, so it's one of the most useful features at any price. Manual incline means you set it before you start. Auto incline changes at the press of a button while you walk.
4. Maximum user weight
Choose a machine rated comfortably above your weight. A higher limit usually means a sturdier frame. Read our guide to treadmill weight limits.
5. How it folds
Some treadmills fold flat and slide under a sofa or bed. Others fold upright against a wall. Measure your space first: our guide Will a treadmill fit under my sofa or bed? shows you how.
6. Delivery, trial and warranty
At this price, delivery and after-sales care matter as much as the machine. Check whether delivery is free, whether you can return it if it doesn't suit you, and what the warranty covers. If you'd like to spread the cost, we've also explained how to pay for a treadmill monthly with Klarna or PayPal.
